Mastering the basics (crucial) – Checking we are strong and stable enough in the Front squat, Presses, Push presses, Overhead squat, Deadlift.
Once these have the quality required, we hit the warm-up drills and develop barbell complexes (beasts in their own right)
When ready we get dynamic into the hit and shrug and the whole lift for both lifts.
Uniquely the most neuro-muscularly demanding exercises. Therefore, from a certain foundation of strength: Increase power.
Control and precision of movement; awareness, confidence
Great transfer of training in several ways for sports
One of the most challenging and rewarding things to learn and become a lifelong learner of! Character building!
One of my City of Bristol Rowers, Cameron, an erstwhile national champion, had learned and utilised the Clean before, but not the Snatch. He was already deadlifting beyond bodyweight, had great squats, pulls and presses, and we wanted to increase his power. Olympic Lifting was a very relevant component to his S&C training. After just a few sessions he had made striking progress with improved high pulls and executed the full lifts with over 50% BW on the bar.
Another learner of Olympic lifting, David, is an experienced gymnast, coach, windsurfer and snowboarder, and has a high training age with traditional strength training. He wanted to utilise Olympic lifting to heighten his sports performance. We added to his rate of force absorption and power qualities ahead of his snowboarding season. Article and highlights training video here on my blog.
Charlie, rubgy player at Cotham Park also learnt quickly, to increase his rate of force development capabilities and underpin his acceleration work. Some raw training clips here.
